Poetry

      A few examples of poetry are: “A man is” by Michael Winn, and “Still i Rise” by Maya Angelo. I believe poetry is a form of art where people can express the way their feeling. A way one can define poetry is by looking for words that appeal the audience emotionally or inspirationally. For example, in the well written poem “A Man is” by Michael Winn he points out the differences between a man and a male.

    When it comes to poetry being popular, I disagree. I believe we are subliminally surrounded by poetry everywhere we go. Although the book definition of poetry is the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts; I would agree that poetry is beyond that. Poetry can be music in which artist express their emotions lyrically. Many people would not assume poetry can be as simple as a picture. I am a firm believer that if anything has a story to it, then it has potential of being poetry.

     My most memorable poem I’ve ever read was “A Man is” by Michael Winn. I was a member of this afterschool program called “Boys to Men”. We had to memorize this poem in order to successfully complete the program. This poem is something I plan to live by forever. I had no idea one simple poem can dramatically change a human beings’ way of thinking.
   
  At my high school, we were taught that poetry is an awesome way expressing oneself. We were also taught that poetry is a powerful tool. A good example of that would be some of Tupac’s poem. In his poems he talks about living in poverty, and politics. Tupac being one out of many African Americans to do so lyrically proves that he is a leader. Although he’s dead, many people loves his music, because it’s real. 

    Poetry that I’ve learned outside of class would probably be through music. Personally I feel poetry outside of a classroom is more effective. We can relate poems by artist than oppose to typical nursery rhymes we learn in class. Poems outside can also be pretty exciting.  For example, at a poet jam even the audience participates. When a poet is finish with their poem, the audience then snaps rather than clapping.

     I wrote many songs throughout my high school years. My favorite song/poem is called “You Can Be”. It’s basically an inspirational song to motivate kids with low self-esteem like myself. Whenever I feel like giving up, I also listen to this song to encourage me. Writing a poem takes a lot of creativity than oppose to reading a poem. Quite frankly, I prefer writing a poem because I am a creative person.
